We completely agree that Remote checkins are desirable in order to allow media rich stories to emerge both around producers and their best local produce. It's a feature that is right at the top of our 'To Do' list.
Remote check-ins present their own set of design challenges, key questions for us are:
> Do people earn the same Lovefre.sh points for making a remote check in? To an extent, we think they should. It's a current dilemma: Rich media is rich media - all information checked in on Lovefre.sh is valuable and therefore deserves to earn check-in points. However, we're not a 'review' platform - were all about the Love - which means that if you check in with Lovefre.sh you are basically giving your seal of approval on a local produce source. Whilst reviews/tasting notes are on the surface a great idea, we need to keep the emphasis on location based check-ins to ensure feedback is reliable and made from first hand experience of the producer. For this reason, we will probably reduce the points earned from reviewing - or indeed keep them entirely separate.
Currently points are calculated very simply: - 1 point for a 'description text' check in - 2 points for a photo check in - 3 points for an audio check in. (making a media rich check in with details worth 6 points).
> Is a remote check-in a 'different' type of check-in to one made at the premises? We think it is - and this is the main reason we have not rolled them out yet. We didn't want to complicate the interface until we've seen how people use it and what difficulties they encounter. Currently, we're considering how best to implement this. -Do we simply call remote check-ins 'Reviews' or 'Tastings' - or are they bundled in with location based check-ins? Do we record the location the review was made at - or tie it into a 'reviews and tastings' listing viewable at the location itself? Current thinking is that everything will be the same as for location based check-ins, but with manual selection/input of the address of the producer and the option to easily click an existing producer and add tasting notes.
We've not made up our minds on this yet, so would love to receive your thoughts.
Unfortunately implementing Remote checkin ins is not something we can do with a switch - and we wanted to launch with our simple core proposition.
At our core, we are a Location Based Service. As such, we're concentrating on getting our Geo-located media rich checkins, produced whilst at a location, working well, before rolling out additional functionality. It's a resource issue for a bootstrapped startup like ourselves.
Our lack of data at this launch stage is by design, was always going to present a challenge, and really does rely on people who value the new approach of lovefre.sh, giving to the community by creating content - which they receive reward points for.
